3PM’s response to COVID-19

3PM's response to COVID-19

by 3PM

In light of the recent developments with the spread of coronavirus COVID-19 in the UK, 3PM would like to reassure clients and the teams we work with that we are taking the necessary steps in line with the governments guidelines. We have prepared a business continuity plan which outlines our measures we have in place which can be issued upon on request, please be in contact with 3pm@3pm.uk.com .

Business Continuity

Responsibility for business continuity within 3PM sits with the Management Team: the group of five partners who manage all of the high-level business affairs of the firm on a national basis. The 3PM Management Team hold overall responsibility for assessing and managing the potential impact of COVID-19 (and the steps put in place by relevant Governments and authorities to deal with it). This includes:

  • Development and implementation of a business continuity plan, taking into account relevant legal and regulatory obligations and the issues we set out below.
  • Prioritising effectively and managing potentially conflicting imperatives.
  • Establishing and maintaining clear internal and external protocols for regular and emergency communication with employees, clients and other key stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and responding to developments and taking advice, with appropriate senior management and/or legal oversight.
  • Consideration for support functions including HR, IT, purchasing, procurement, security and legal and is split across different regions and time zones (where relevant).

Our Team
We have responsibility for our 3PM Family, our Team, and ensure we comply with all health and safety duties, broader duties of care and good faith owed to them, including:

  • Monitoring local Governmental and World Health Organisation advice and notifying/ reminding staff of recommendations not to travel to particular areas and of measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Introducing policies prohibiting or limiting business travel, particularly to high-risk areas, and using our alternative communication solutions (e.g. video-conferencing).
  • All team members are now working from home and using the technologies we have in place to continue working as normal. We have implemented home-working arrangements for projects team members and all our office-based particular roles.
  • Introducing policies on the self-isolation of staff (whether mandated by law, imposed by the business or requested by individual staff members).
  • Establishing procedures requiring staff to report if they feel unwell or are absent, and to report possible infection or exposure to the virus (including following private travel to high-risk areas) or concerns involving others they have been in contact with at work.
  • Providing staff with the right equipment for disinfecting hands and (if official advice recommends) protective masks, and with any additional health and safety training or support that they might need.
  • Planning resourcing strategies such as the re-allocation of staff, the splitting of teams, the rotation of in-office/home-working arrangements or the cross-training of staff who perform business-critical functions, to minimise the risks of disruption if large numbers of staff, or key staff, are absent.
  • Make special arrangements for vulnerable employees.

Every staff member is set up to work remotely, so should we need to isolate the entire company, business will continue as normal and our services will remain unaffected. Measures of this policy includes:

  • Robust communications channels are in place including mobile phones, and office landline diversions should attendance in the office be unavailable for some time.
  • We operate on Office365 where all of our emails and files are stored securely on the cloud and can be accessed by our team anywhere and at any time.
  • We use Microsoft Teams for conference and video calls and can utilise this platform at any time should face-to-face meetings not be appropriate or recommended. A Microsoft Teams conference call can accommodate up to 300 participants enabling us to run full project and company meetings fast. The messaging feature also lets us chat to specific Teams of people at once in real time.
  • Our mainstream suppliers such as Microsoft have also planned various measures to assist with remote working.
  • We also use our company Whatsapp group to provide the team updates in real time.
  • We educate our team how to stay productive when working remotely.

We are also maintaining regular contact with our entire team to ensure their physical and mental wellbeing is maintained during this testing time for all, and providing tips for productive and successful remote and home working methods. We feel keeping constant communication with our team is important to ensure they are all ok and we will always continue to support them in any way we can to help them and their families through this time.

We will also provide our team with regular updates at our Monday morning team ‘huddle’ which is a forum for business updates, what’s happening on our projects and resource needs within the team.

Should a member of our team contract the virus and become unwell or have to self-isolate, we have team backup plans in place to ensure continuity of our service to our clients and projects, including:

  • Our project partners are actively involved in projects to provide back up to our project management teams.
  • Our peer partners are deployed on every scheme as a backup to ensure that if any partner is off sick, our clients have access to senior level support who are up to date on the project.
  • We carry availability within our project management delivery teams so that should a team member fall ill, another will be available to take their place temporarily.

Continuous Working From Home
In the event of a prolonged period of remote working, we will implement our communications plan which includes:

  • Team members reporting to a Partner on a daily basis
  • Formal sickness notifications via the line manager plus the Partner responsible for projects affected
  • Contact to be maintained at least once a day ensuring all deadlines are met and understood
  • Where necessary other team members allocated by agreement with all Partners

Contact Us
All communications to the 3PM Team are still operational as normal so please continue to communicate in the usual ways to us. We hope everyone we work with stays well, safe and takes care during this time.

We are committed to you all and will help when and where we can, please do not hesitate to contact us in any regard.

-The 3PM Team.

Achieving NetZero

Achieving NetZero

by 3PM

How can you achieve NetZero in projects?

Well, a mindset shift is required.  NetZero or Low Carbon design must be central to the design and the design philosophy through all the stages.  Base build, fit-out, FFE and in-use analysis should be undertaken at the beginning to understand the targets and achievability that informs the design.

The measurement of embodied carbon is still an evolving science with little benchmarking available for full comparative study.  Utilising established certifications including; BREEAM (Outstanding), PassivHaus / EnerPHit and WELL as examples, these can all aid in focusing the design teams on the challenge.  Our experiences have been proven on some award-winning schemes such as UEA Enterprise Centre to date and have prompted the development of the following route map to meet the challenges set by the LETI Climate Emergency Design Guide.  We are currently using this philosophy on our low carbon retrofit for the Cambridge Institute of Sustainable Leadership (CISL).

Rough Runner for Demelza House

Rough Runner for Demelza House Charity

by 3PM

Earlier this month, the 3PM team channelled their inner Gladiators, donning their trainers to participate in the 5km Rough Runner, to raise money for Demelza House, a children’s charity close to our hearts. Inspired by physically demanding TV game shows such as Total Wipeout and Ninja Warrior, the mud filled assault course saw the team clamber over obstacles, leap across pools of muddy water and run, jump and dodge their way out of moving targets. All whilst getting covered head-to-toe in thick mud and raising money for an excellent cause!

The 3PM team are proud to have raised an amazing £1250.41 for the charity- a massive 185% of our original target! This money will help fund vital care and support for children with serious and terminal conditions.

Demelza House believe that every child and young person who has a terminal condition should receive the care and attention they need to live the most fulfilling life they can, and that the children and their families should have the opportunity to build memories, for however long they have together. The charity provides tailored, personalised programmes of care for babies, children, young people and their families across South East London, Kent and East Sussex, providing support at home, in the community and at their two hospices.

We had a great day participating in the Rough Runner and there was an amazing sense of camaraderie within the team – well done to everyone who participated! A massive thank you to everyone who sponsored us, your donations will help fund exceptional care for children with complex medical needs. If you would like to donate to Demelza House, please do so via our fundraising page.

Keep your eyes on our news page for more of our charity events!

Five 4 Five – Summer Party

Five 4 Five - Summer Party

by Suzannah Howson

As 3PM are turning 5 years old this year we are gearing up to celebrate with another great event – our Summer Party. We have chosen the Barbican Conservatory in London as it is a hidden gem of a venue creating a tropical solace in the middle of a concrete jungle.

We also worked with the Barbican and completed refurbishment works for them including the theatre / cinema hall. A great Client and a great venue.

As part of our evening we have live music, games and a raffle for a charity close to our hearts, Helen and Douglas House, which is a children’s hospice providing emotional, medical and practical care for families with terminally ill children. They provide support for the children and families to live the best life together.

Find out more here: http://www.helenanddouglas.org.uk/

Life is for celebrating. So we look forward to celebrating with you at our Summer Party!

Blue Abyss in the news

Blue Abyss in the news

by Patrick Watson

Consultant Team picked for £60m space research mission

Team is appointed for NASA-supported Blue Abyss project to build world’s deepest swimming pool in Essex.
A consultant team has been appointed on a £60m project to build the world’s deepest swimming pool, designed for spaceflight and human endurance research, in Essex. The Blue Abyss project – supported by organisations including Nasa and the European Space Agency (ESA), as well as the UK’s newest astronaut Tim Peake – involves building a 50m deep pool in Colchester that will simulate the microgravity of outer space and deep sea environments.
Consultants appointed include 3PM as project manager, Gardiner & Theobald as cost manager, Scott Brownrigg as architect, Pell Frischmann as structural engineer and Hoare Lea as M&E engineer. The Blue Abyss pool will be far deeper than Nasa’s 12m deep training pool in Houston. At 50m long, 40m wide and 50m deep, it will be the world’s largest by volume.
Within the complex – to be situated on the University of Essex’s Colchester campus – there will be a lecture theatre and classrooms, a hyperbaric suite (decompression chamber), a “mission control” video room for pool supervision and training feedback, and an adjacent 120-bed hotel. Commercial and recreational divers will be able to conduct training within the pool, while free-divers can test their endurance in the 50m shaft. Simulated cave systems and “shipwrecks” can also be added into the pool, as well as a flexible lighting system and lifting platforms, allowing the pool to be customised for a range of uses. Tim Peake – who grabbed headlines last month after becoming the UK’s first European Space Agency astronaut and who is currently living on the International Space Station – has previously said: “I’m very supportive of what Blue Abyss are doing and see this future facility as something that does not yet exist in Europe and that would compete with, or potentially even surpass, what is available in the US and Russia.” Other supporters of Blue Abyss include Helen Sharman, the first Briton in space, Walter Kuehnegger, one of NASA’s Apollo Lunar Exploration principle investigators and Scott Parazynski, a former NASA astronaut. Gardiner & Theobald partner, Chris Boyce, said: “We are very excited to be appointed on the world’s first commercial ‘space environment’ simulation facility for aerospace research and development.”

3PM Risk Process

Adopting a more collaborative approach to risk mitigation

by Rob Burborough

At 3PM we pride ourselves in being leaders in risk management. We utilise these skills on every project we manage for the benefit of the project and our Clients. This expert advice has been shared with numerous Clients which has saved them time and money. Most people view risk management as being overly cumbersome and ineffective which is perhaps why so many professionals don’t embrace risk management. At 3PM we adopt a different approach by proactively involving the whole team and engaging them with the process and educating them to understand how managing risk is a benefit to all. How do we get the team to buy into this philosophy? Its simple, we link each team members perceived risk with the actuality of the risk. this is based on their knowledge of the issue and the empowerment to create mitigations from that risk analysis.
Our assessment of risk goes beyond a register to explore the 3 point cost and programme scenarios to inform trends and contingencies thus allowing mitigation.

Find out more on how we deal with risk by talking to one of our experts. Contact Rob Burborough or Patrick Watson in the office.

3PM part of Consortium to Design New Cell Therapy Catapult Manufacturing Centre

3PM part of Consortium to Design New Cell Therapy Catapult Manufacturing Centre

by Rob Burborough

Supporting growth of UK cell therapy industry

3PM worked with a consortium of companies to complete the RIBA Stage 3 design: MSPS to provide mechanical and engineering, civil and structural and CDM service; The Fairhursts Design Group as project architects; and Gardiner & Theobald as cost managers,

The large-scale GMP manufacturing centre, due to open in 2017, will be used by companies for the manufacture of late-phase clinical trial material and initial commercial supply of advanced therapeutic medicinal products including cell and gene therapies.

Robert Burborough, partner at 3PM comments that this is a fantastic project: “The centre will change the scientific landscape for targeted cell technology and we are very proud as a team to be involved.’

Simon Steed, associate director building services of MSPS, adds that the consortium team was chosen for its combined expertise in designing a Class B environment facility: “The design will allow for further growth and business efficiency,” he says.

Mark Adey, director at The Fairhursts Design Group explains its brief was to develop a flexible and collaborative working environment that would provide cell therapy researchers with an opportunity to lease high quality clean room facilities in the heart of a world-leading innovation campus: “It is an incredibly complex scheme made even more challenging by the tight timescales and budgets involved, but we are thrilled to be a part of it and look forward to working with the wider development team to take the project through to completion.”

Keith Thompson, CEO of the Cell Therapy Catapult, said: “The large-scale GMP manufacturing centre is instrumental in our goal to transform the UK cell and gene therapy industry, advancing research into commercially viable and investible therapies. It will enable companies to operate at the scale needed to support Phase III clinical trials.”

The new facility is being built on the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst campus, Hertfordshire, and will create up to 150 new jobs and provide consistent and reliable transport of products into the European Union within 24 hours.
