Wellcome Trust
Kitchen Garden
The vision
The Wellcome Trust Board of Governors felt that activities at the end of the conference day were equally important to the success of the interaction and collaboration among the visiting researchers, and requested that a larger bar (for up to 100-120 people) be considered.
The option to locate the new Bar in the Kitchen Garden became the catalyst to link to the developing Science Strategy by enhancing public engagement space, provided breakout space for the RFP and James Watson meeting rooms and the Crick Auditorium and resolving existing circulation bottlenecks in the colonnade.
This brief provides new ‘public’ space that can be used flexibly day and night. More importantly it creates a new image for the Conference Centre; one that is more representative of its mission and international reputation, and celebrates communication, collaboration, achievement and creativity.
The new enclosure provides flexible multi-use space for day and night activities including breakout space, soft seating and space for exhibitions, science poster sessions and trade exhibitors. The enlarged space remedies current bottlenecks in the existing cloister corridors.
